The Aroma Guides take a closer look at how to make natural, homemade shampoo for our crowning glories!

Much like our skin, there are many different types of hair, all with different needs. So when it came to homemade shampoo, we wanted something that was simple and mild enough to use fairly regularly. Depending on the essential oils you select, this shampoo is also mild enough for children too.

Benefits of homemade shampoo

The best part about making your own products is that you can avoid many of the nasty chemicals that often appear in many cosmetics. And if you have sensitive skin – or a sensitive scalp – this shampoo is gentle, smells good, and has additional nutritive benefits for your scalp and hair.

Star of the show: Castile soap

Castile soap provides the base for this rejuvenating shampoo. Castile soap has been around since the 11th Century, is 100% vegetable-based, and generally well tolerated by sensitive skin. It’s made out of ingredients like coconut, hemp, sunflower seed, jojoba, and olive.

Additionally, it’s fairly inexpensive and can be used for a range of home cleaning. As it’s free from added chemicals, it does an excellent job of cleaning. It’s more concentrated than regular liquid soap (by two to three times), so you will not need that much and we recommend an abundant use of water when washing your hair.

Essential oils for haircare

All hair types: rosemary, sage, rose, or lavender

Oily hair: lemon, bergamot, or tea tree

Dry hair or problem scalp: lavender, geranium, or sandalwood

Hair growth: peppermint or rosemary

If you’re in the US or Canada, this essential oils set is a good place to start!

Natural Homemade Shampoo

  • 250 ml of liquid Castile soap (approx 8.5 fluid ounces)
  • 125 ml full fat coconut milk (you can also use water, but it will change the consistency and be less moisturizing)
  • 1 tbsp aloe vera gel
  • 1 tsp carrier oil – we suggest jojoba oil or almond oil
  • 25 drops of essential oils – see suggestions above
  • 5 drops carrot seed oil (omit if you don’t have this)

Tools required

  • Blender – immersion or regular
  • Glass bowl or jar for mixing
  • Glass, or plastic, pump bottle for storage and dispensing

Method

  • Add all ingredients to your glass bowl or jar
  • Blend well using your blender of choice or shake the jar vigorously until all ingredients are well-mixed
  • Pour the shampoo into a glass or plastic pump bottle. Enjoy!

Tip: if you want to make less, you can halve the recipe. If using coconut milk, we recommend storing part of the shampoo in the fridge if you or your household are not using it regularly. It will last for up to one month.
